Planning a Maison Bolton Wedding: A Photographer's Guide

What I noticed photographing an editorial at a private lakeside estate in Bolton-Ouest.

A cedar-shingled house, a private lake and 244 acres of meadow and forest: a wedding at Maison Bolton is planned around the grounds and the light.

Maison Bolton is a private estate in Bolton-Ouest, in Quebec's Eastern Townships, where you can hold an intimate wedding across 244 acres of meadow, forest and private lake. I photographed an editorial there, and this guide gathers what I noticed about the house, the grounds and the light, and what I would tell a couple planning a Maison Bolton wedding.

All the photographs in this guide are mine, from an editorial planned and designed by Foudamour.

Can you get married at Maison Bolton?

Yes. Maison Bolton lists intimate weddings among the experiences it hosts, alongside editorials, corporate retreats and private celebrations. The estate is rented only as a full private rental, so while you are there the house and the grounds are yours and no other event shares the property. Enquiries go through the Maison Bolton website.

That shapes everything else in this guide. Maison Bolton is not a banquet hall with weddings booked back to back. It is closer to borrowing a family's country house for a weekend with your closest people, and building the celebration around it.

What is Maison Bolton like?

The estate began as a private family property and has been opened to guests as a secluded retreat. Its centrepiece is a cedar-shingled main house with a round porch under a conical roof, carved wooden front doors and stone steps framed by hostas and potted flowers. Below the house, a long lawn runs down to the lake, where a small island edged with stone walls sits just off the shore and a rowboat waits at the dock. A lakefront cabin, which the estate calls the Lake House, stands among the spruce at the water's edge. The grounds also include a pool and an orchard.

From the air, the layout is easy to read. The house, the pool and the gardens sit at the top of the property, the lawn opens out below them, and forest closes in all around. Beyond the trees there is only more forest and the low hills of the Eastern Townships. For a wedding, that means real privacy and a setting that looks nothing like a city venue.

The spaces inside the house

Maison Bolton feels like a home rather than a hotel, and the estate describes its rooms that way:

  • The Cathedral Room. A bright room with open lines and soft light, the natural place inside for a small gathering or for portraits on a grey day.
  • The family living room. Beside the kitchen and breakfast nook, centred on a fireplace, for the quieter moments of a wedding weekend.
  • The kitchen and dining room. A gourmet kitchen, a sunlit breakfast nook and a dining room with a butler's pantry, which make a welcome dinner or a morning-after brunch easy to host.
  • The master suite and five bedrooms. The suite has a king-size bed, a sitting area and his and hers washrooms and closets, and five more bedrooms give the wedding party room to stay on site.

The space I remember most is the entrance hall. A white staircase curves up through two storeys beneath a painted mural of a snowy landscape, with a candle chandelier hanging in the stairwell. Seen from the upper landing, it is one of the loveliest indoor portrait spots I know, and it works in any weather.

I have left guest numbers and prices out of this guide on purpose. The estate offers several kinds of stay, including an estate weekend package, and the venue is the right source for current rates, capacity and what is included.

Where can you hold the ceremony at Maison Bolton?

Outdoors, the lawn between the house and the lake gives you the most choice. With so much land and no other event on the property, a ceremony can face the water, sit out in the meadow or take place in the shade at the edge of the forest. Ask the estate which spots it recommends and how the grounds are prepared.

When I was there, a clear-roofed tent stood on the lawn at the edge of the lake. A tent like this keeps the view and the light while sheltering guests from rain or strong sun. If you want one, ask the estate and your planner whether it is part of the rental or brought in separately, and where it can go.

For a rain plan, look to the house: the Cathedral Room and the entrance hall are beautiful places to move a small ceremony indoors.

What does a reception at Maison Bolton look like?

A long table on the lawn, with the house rising behind it, is the image of Maison Bolton I keep coming back to. For the editorial, Foudamour set a single banquet table in white linen below the house, with wooden slatted chairs, tall tapers and low arrangements of garden flowers. In the late afternoon the sun comes in low across the lawn and lights the whole table from the side.

For a larger dinner, a tent by the lake is the natural place for the reception, with the water and the island behind it. A very small wedding can dine at one table on the lawn, or in the dining room inside.

What is the light like at Maison Bolton?

Open and changing. The estate faces long views across lawn and water, so the light shifts a great deal through the day, from bright and hard at midday to low and golden in the evening. Here is how I would plan around it.

  • Save the late afternoon. The lawn and the lake are at their best when the sun is low. Plan the cocktail hour and your portraits for the last two hours before sunset.
  • Photograph the design early. Tables, stationery and flowers look best before guests arrive, while the light is clean and nobody is in the frame.
  • Use the house at midday. When the sun is high, the porch, the front doors and the staircase give soft, shaded light.
  • Plan the aerial views. Drone photographs of the house, the lake and the forest are part of what makes a Maison Bolton gallery different. Check with the estate before flying and give it a few minutes in the timeline.

Where can you take wedding portraits at Maison Bolton?

Without leaving the property. The carved front doors and the stone steps give a classic portrait in open shade. Inside, the staircase is the obvious choice. Outside, the lawn sloping to the lake, the island and the dock, the meadows and the forest paths all give different backgrounds within a few minutes' walk.

That variety is what I liked most. In one afternoon a couple can have formal portraits at the house, relaxed photos walking through the meadow and golden hour by the water, without getting into a car.

Planning tips for a Maison Bolton wedding

  • Plan a weekend, not just a day. Because the estate is a full private rental with bedrooms on site, a welcome dinner the night before and a brunch the morning after are easy to add. Tell your photographer which parts of the weekend you want covered.
  • Work with a planner. A countryside estate asks for more coordination than a hotel: rentals, catering, a tent, transport and a rain plan. A planner who knows the estate, as Foudamour did for this editorial, makes the set-up and the timeline far easier.
  • Ask about catering and deliveries. Check which caterers and rental companies the estate works with, and when suppliers can arrive to set up.
  • Choose rentals that suit the setting. For this editorial, tableware came from Splendid Settings, textiles from Simply Beautiful Decor, decor from La Vie est une Fête and furniture and props from Joe's Prop House.
  • Plan where guests sleep and how they get there. The house holds the wedding party; other guests will need rooms nearby and a way to get back after dark on country roads.
  • Ask about the season. The lawn, the orchard and the lake are made for the warmer months. Ask the estate about availability and what the grounds offer at other times of year.
  • Take the details outside. Stationery and signs look lovely on the lawn. Here, White Willow Paper Co. made a gingham seating chart that read "In the garden of love", set against the lake and the trees.
