Post-Wedding Photo Session in Tuz Gölü

There are locations that ask a photographer to work hard, and there are locations that simply hand you something. Tuz Gölü, the salt lake in central Anatolia, is the second kind. It remains one of my favourite sessions I have ever photographed.

Why Tuz Gölü works for a post-wedding session

Tuz Gölü is Turkey's second-largest lake and one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world. For most of the year it holds only a few centimetres of water over a hard salt crust, and that does two things at once: it turns the ground into a shallow mirror, and it removes every landmark from the frame. There is no treeline, no building and no real horizon — just white ground, open sky and the couple.

That emptiness is the point. With no competing detail, a dress moves differently, footprints read as a line drawn across the frame, and the light stays soft far longer than it would anywhere with shade. It is a landscape that rewards restraint rather than styling.

A couple who travelled for the location

My couple came from Russia specifically to photograph here after their wedding, the bride wearing a dress by Wedstyle. A post-wedding session is one of the most underrated parts of a wedding year: the dress is already paid for, the nerves of the day itself are long gone, and you can give a full afternoon to a single location instead of squeezing portraits between a ceremony and a dinner.

Planning a destination session in Turkey

If you are considering a post-wedding or elopement session in a landscape like this, plan around the light rather than the drive. Salt reflects hard through the middle of the day, so the last two hours before sunset are worth building the whole trip around. Sensible shoes for the walk out, and a willingness to let the hem of a dress get wet, cover most of the rest.
